When  we  first  got  started  &  met  Dennis  &  Judy  Ansetta  &  made  arrangements  to  go  to  their  ranch  to  purchase  our  first  Fullblood  Boer  Doe.  We  had  never  been  there  &  were  totally  amazed  at  the  goats  of  ALL  types  that  we  saw.  Judy  was  especially  proud  of  her  dairy  goats  &  we  talked  about  some  day  maybe  adding  that  to  our  ranch  would  be  fun.  Well  it  didn't  take  long  &  we  added  a  nubian,  &  our  love  for  dairy  goats  started,  however  Alanna  always  like  to  be  different  &  so  we  decided  in  2006  to  look  for  another  less  common  breed  of  dairy  goats.  After  a  lot  of  research  into  several  breeds  including  Oberhasli,  Golden  Gurnseys,  &  Saanens.  Michael  really  like  the  Saanens,  but  Alanna  &  I  liked  color,  so  we  compromised.  SABLES!

One  BIG  problem.  There  weren't  that  many  &  certainly  none  within  a  few  hours  driving  distance  that  we  could  find.  Finally  I  found  some  in  Wakarusa  Indiana.  Plans  were  made  &  we  would  meet  Mr.  Tim  Flickinger  of  Slick's  Acres  in  Missouri  to  pick  up  our  Sables.  Three  in  total.  Flick's  Acres  LCA  Jojaba,  a  doe  in  milk,  a  doeling  Flick's  Acres  MAV  Jolie  Blonde,  &  a  buckling Flick's Acres  Jean  Claude.  We  know  had  our  sable  herd.  Special  "Thanks"  to  Mr.  Tim  Flickinger  of  Flick's  Acres  for  raising  these  beautiful  creatures  that  were  the  start  of  our  herd.

What  a  trip  that  turned  out  to  be.  We  went  in  the  "Goat  Wagon."  That  was  it's  last  trip.  It  stalled  a  time  or  so  but  made  the  very  long  12  hour  one  way  trip  &  then  back  home  again.  This  trip  was  really  an  adventure.  We  never  had  a  milking  doe.  Mr.  Tim  had  said  she  would  let  us  know  when  she  was  ready  &  around  5pm  that  evening  somewhere  in  a  little  town  in  Arkansas,  she  did.  Now  just  where  do  you  pull  off  to  milk  a  goat.  At  the  nearest  convenience  store  of  course!

We  pulled  up  to  the  side  of  the  store  &  got  "Josie"  out  of  the  van  &  I  started  milking  while  Alanna  kept  the  other  two  in  the  van  &  Dad  held  Josie's  lead.  She  just  stood  there,  as  if  to  say  "Oh  thank  you."  While  I  was  milking,  we  became  the  latest  attraction,  especially  we  Alanna  got  the  babies  out  to  walk  them  &  give  them  a  bottle.  People  were  slowing  down  &  then  turning  around  to  come  back  by.  Others  were  pulling  over  &  bringings  their  kids  to  see  &  pet  the  goats.  We  even  had  some  people  try  to  buy  the milk.  It  didn't  take  long  for  the  parking  lot  to  be  full.  After  our  planned  15  minute  stop  turned  into  about  an  hour,  we  were  once  again  on  the  road  again  &  headed  home.  That  was  the  start  of  our  love  for  this  truly  gentle  giants  of  the  goat  world.

This  page  is  dedicated  to  Flick's  Acres  LCA  Jojaba  "Josie"  &  Flick's  Acres  Jean  Claude.  They  are  no  longer  with  us,  but  their  wonderful  personalities  &  breed  confirmation  can  still  be  seen  in  our  Sable  herd  today.  They  left  permanent  hoof  marks  on  our  hearts  &  they  are  greatly  missed.

Sometimes  there  is  a  goat  that  comes  along  that  is just  "that  special."  That  was  Josie.  From  the  day  we  got  her,  Alanna  formed  a  special  bond  with  her.  They  just  clicked.  Before  Josie  came  along  Alanna  hated  to  do  showmanship.  She  would  work  with  a  goat  &  have  it  perfect  at  home  &  then  get  to  a  show  &  well  the  goat  would  do  things  their  way  &  it  just  wasn't  working  out.  After  constantly  being  back  of  the  pack  Alanna  finally  just  refused  to  do  showmanship.  Then  about  a  year  later  along  came  Josie.  She  had  already  been  shown  some  &  had  such  a  laid  back  personality  &  truly  loved  to  show,  that  Alanna  decided  to  try  Showmanship  again.  Josie  gave  Alanna  the  confidence  that  she  needed  &  they  became  a  team.  They  were  rarely  beat.  Besides  showmanship,  together  they  won  many  local  4-H  &  JLGA  Dairy  Championship.  Josie  was  so  much  larger  than  anything  else  that  was  showing  on  the  youth  circuit,  that  she  drew  a  lot  of  attention  especially  on  the  JLGA  show  circuit  &  all  the  other  kids  wanted  to  help  Alanna  show  her.  So  when  Alanna  &  Josie  would  come  up  for  drive  &  she  had  another  goat  in  there,  she  would  let  one  of  the  other  kids  show  Josie.  Josie  never  stood  as  still  for  them  as  she  did  for  Alanna  &  would  always  be  looking  around  for  Alanna.  One  time  she  even  tried  to  bite  to  young  fellow  that  was  helping  Alanna  out.  So  from  then  on  Alanna  always  showed  her.  The  kids  always  got  plenty  of  opportunities  to  fool  with  Josie  since  she  would  always  stand  on  the  fence  at  shows  &  hollar  till  someone  came  along  &  petted  her.  She  was  such  a  people  goat  when  it  came  to  being  petted  &  loved  on.  Alanna  even  walked  her  in  our  hometown  Christmas  parade  one  Year  &  Josie  loved  all  the  attention  &  treats  she  was  getting  along  the  way.

Although  Josie  never  blessed  us  with  a  doe,  she  did  give  us  2  kiddings  with  2  beautiful  bucklings  each.  Out  of  her  first  kidding  we  would  sell  one  to  a  breeders  near  Shreveport  &  would  retain  the  other  that  unfortunately  we  would  loose  a  little  later  on  due  to  unknown  causes.  Out  of  her  second  kidding  we  had  decided  right  from  the  start  to  keep  both  bucklings.  Josie  passed  just  a  month  after  getting  birth  to  Embry  &  Quill.  It  was  really  a  challenge  to  get  them  on  a  bottle.  Quil  finally  took  it  it  &  never  looked  back.  Embry  was  another  matter.  He  never  did,  We  finally  borrowed  a  nubian  cross  doe  in  milk  &  we  would  hold  her  for  him  to  nurse  4  times  a  day.  We  guess   It  just  wasn't  meant  to  be  for  Embry  cause  we  would  loose  him  a  little  later  on  to  unknown  causes.  Quil  however  thrived  &  grew  &  grew  &  is  our  current  Sable  herd  sire.

Josie  lives  on  through  Quil  &  now  grandsons  &  granddaughters  here  at  our  ranch.  Besides  passing  on  her  wonderful  genetics  &  confirmation,  she  also  passed  on  her  sweet  disposition  &  loving  personality.  We  feel  very  blessed  to  have  had  Josie  cross  our  lives  &  leave  her  hoof  prints  forever  on  our  hearts.
